    I know next to nothing about modems, all I do know is that a 56K dial-up is crap, and that's what I've got

    So I was wandering what would be best to upgrade to. I can't change my ISP and can't change to broad band, basically what I'm looking for is something I can just go out, buy and install ...if this is possible?

    If you can't change your ISP, then a modem upgrade will do you no good. A 56K modem is intended to work with a 56K service.
