so there releasing this AND a ps3??????
hmmmm![]()
every time a new gadget comes out that does something similar to what a PC can do, some newbie has to pop up and go "it's just a computer, PC is better." PC would be better if it just did those things without lagging, crashing, catching viruses, giving you all sorts of errors and incompatibilities, having to share resources with other programs, or having to run on top of WINDOWS.Originally posted by ttttttttt@10 October 2003 - 09:53

designing a machine to do a limited set of very specific tasks gives it a chance to excel at those tasks.
sony's stance is that PSX's main purpose is not as a game console. firstly it's a PVR, secondly it has a PS2 built into it. it's a multi-purpose entertainment appliance, not a console. according to sony's marketing people, anyway.Originally posted by Kk4S-HaVoK@10 October 2003 - 10:06

it's even bigger than the Xbox, and it'll probably be expensive; at least $400.![]()
no it not. its smaller then the X-Box but more features. its not just a game console anymore its basically the whole entertainment center it has a TiVo a DVD Player it can play Audio it can play PS1 and Ps2 games. add up each one of those features. also the most a standard Tivo comes with is 80 gig HDD while this will have a 160 gig HDD. the DVD player in this thing isn't crappy like the Ps2 or X-Box either.also instead of having to buy a Network adapter to play online it comes with builtin LAN connector and the online play is still free like the Ps2.
pretty much a Computer for your TV but theres a plus, no Windows OS.

I don't know why u guys cirisize microsoft..i mean like windows might be a huge resource hog and slow and everything..but without it you wouldnt have anything...no Halflife no CS no MOHAA no anything...we would sitll be using macs (ewww) linux came after...witout windows there would be nothin but like shitty 1mhz macs lol
Sounds about right.Originally posted by stupidguy@10 October 2003 - 17:13

i didn't criticize Microsoft. i just said that a lot of home electronics perform their tasks better than a PC because they use firmware/software designed for specific applications, rather than having a whole desktop OS running just to capture an MPEG or play a game.Originally posted by Black.Ops@10 October 2003 - 11:25

i wouldn't have anything without Microsoft? you should quit exaggerating. HL, CS, and MoHAA run just fine on openGL, which doesn't depend on Microsoft. game consoles have gotten along just fine without Microsoft-- precisely two consoles (Dreamcast & Xbox) have run on the Windows kernel, compared to dozens that haven't. MPEG and all of its variations (VCD, DVD, DIVX, MP3) are completely independent of Microsoft.
i actually like Windows XP a lot. i like Mac OSX too. Windows and MacOS are both great desktop PC systems, but they're slow and bloated compared to the firmware that's streamlined to perform simple functions in other home electronics. a TiVo can capture high quality video with a 75mhz CPU and 16mb RAM, because it's designed specifically for that one task-- try doing the same with Windows on a 75mhz CPU... it's impossible.
