I forgot to mention that when I used the 2004 version, I installed it as is and its 1 click maintenance ran and deleted all my Acronis images from my D drive. Needless to say I was really ticked off. Since then I immediately shut down the 1 click function right after install. They may have fixed the problem but my backuop images are too important to me to allow the 1 Click to ever run again.

And basically I use Tuneup for its registry cleaner only anyway and the system optimization tools just once. So when I turn off 1 click it allows me to use just what I want without the risk of all features running automatically and screwing up something.

What I found is using the registry cleaner (and by the way it has never deleted anything that messed up my system) along with a good defragmenter (PerfectDisk is my favorite) and a file eraser (Windows Recycle Bin doesn't erase, it fills the blank space of the drive with junk) like Bcwipe (theres an actual older free one that will run on XP but not Vista or 7) or Hiedi's Eraser (works on Vista and 7 but screws up locked files sometimes) I have found I can go for years without slowing down and having to reformat. Before I started this I had to reformat every 6 months or so or my system slowed to a crawl.

If you google "last free version" and look for the 321download site, you will find page after page of free stuff (allthough it is older and most will not run on Vista or 7). If you use 98SE or XP you can find some gems there like the Bcwipe I mentioned and a precursor to convertxtodvd.
