Dvd Rip Question

If i rent a movie from like say blockbuster, and i want to do a "dvd rip" (like how they put dvd_rip on those really high quality avi's) how do i do it? do i need a tv capture card? but those are like terible quality. i have a dvd rom so can i just put the dvd into my comp and somehow rip it into an avi? and i want to encode it with either xvid or divx, so it takes less space. little help please
