I don't know about Windsows 7 but I was having a lot of problems with it in Vista. It was slowing down my internet a lot for some reason and I didn't know how to fix the problem so I just gave up.

Now I'm using AVG Antivirus + Firewall. I heard good things about it and from what I've seen it's pretty smooth. I also started using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to go with it after seeing this thread(thanks for the suggestion Peat Moss)

Avira Personal Edition. Free and effective, lot of useful settings, low rate of false positives, frequent updates, good scanner, windows context menu integration, low cpu usage, what else do you need?

I used to have comodo internet security installed on my Windows 7 x32 installation. For some reason it started causing some weird issue where my pc rode along about as slow a snail slithers across your front porch. The screen lagged until it eventually froze. After uninstalling it, the system recovered completely. Haven't really had any protection on here other than Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, which hasn't found any infections yet.

Ive been using bullguard firewall and antivirus for the last year and havent had any issues so far. Its all integrated and doesnt seem to affect performance and doesnt nag you very often (unlike norton). All in all very happy with it.

Stay well away from norton! That program is such a resource hog. I recently tried to remove it from a friends computer. What a job that turned out to be as it doesnt uninstall completely and leaves loads of crap behind in the registry, so had to go in manually and remove loads of keys and values.
