I have also tried to increase the bitrate so i get better quality but cant seem to do it.
If that VCD header trick works, there must be a way to trick the player into playing a higher bit rate VCD

i already answered that. his question is, why is a factory-pressed VCD better than a VCD encoded at home? it's because commercial VCD companies use better encoding equipment/software than PC users have access to.
you prolly have to view some official asian VCD releases (not bootlegs) from major film studios, to completely understand soma's question. many of them do look much better than any DVD-to-VCD copies that i've seen, and better than the average DivX3.11 conversion. because of the limited image resolution though, they're not as good as DivX5/XviD/SVCD copied from DVD.
