this message comes up when I try to open some movie files in virtualdub
"couldn't locate decompressor for format 'XVID'(unknown).virtualdub requires a video for windows(VFW) compatable codec to decompress video.Direct Show codecs,such as those used by windows media player,are not suitable"
what does this mean?

Well, that's your problem u need to do a clean uninstall and reinstall and make sure any other codecs u have invidually are unistalled as well.

i did uninstall and reinstall from your link and the same message appears.If I have more codecs how do I find them?I know this may sound stupid but it is a learning process!!!!
