i currently share an account with someone at simplyusenet; and they are fantastic.
i'm on the west coast of the USA, and my down-link speed (4MB/s) is maxed out anytime i use them (and their servers are in the Netherlands!).

my general use account is supernews. also fantastic. always maxed speed, and great reliability.

about a month ago, i cut ties with astraweb.

    was a hard decision.

    @ "Cabalo"

    you are wrong.
simplyusenet has *no* US server farm
(...yet... as of April 20th 2010... they claim to be building a PoP here in the US.)

Any reason, other than price, that you chose to stop subscribing to astraweb? They seemed good when I was with them last year and I was thinking about going back, but I'm also open to alternatives.

for months their performance degraded (speed and article completion)
i tried to give them the benefit of the doubt because:
    1- the price was right
2- their retention was top notch
3- their server farm here in the us peers with my isp (in other words, speed was *never* less then 4.10MB/s)

now; my speeds with them are around 2.5MB/s, and article completion is nothing to write home about.

    my top picks are:
    1- Supernews
    2- UsenetNow (or BlockNews)
    3- SimplyUsenet

Still with Giganews mainly because of the VPN and a bit of laziness.

I stick to Gianews. Tried Astraweb several times. First, it was very good and i frozen my account on giganews. But recently its been hard to upload to usenet via astraweb. Many incompletes. Dunno if they fixed it coz im back to giganews again

If someone makes a list of providers, I'll make the poll.

There are too many of them to make a poll. I suggest making this list:
    ***********
    Giganews
    Astraweb
    Newshosting
    NewsDemon
    Newsgoupdirect
    UseNetServer
    ThunderNews
    Supernews
    Easynews
    Binverse
    UseNeXT
    Others
    ********
    Taken from here http://www.newsgroupreviews.com/usenet-providers.html

The best are Ginaews, Astraweb and Highwinds. Thet got numerous resellers all over the world
    Check it out
    http://www.newsgroupservers.net/news...rver_resellers

Though< if its possible you can include all of them ^^

Astraweb is sufficient for me. Haven't bothered looking for alternatives.
