If you're using FireFox go to "about:config" and set "image.animation_mode" to none.

I find animated avatars and signatures very distracting when trying to read and I tried using adblock but they seem to multiply faster than I can block them, so that was the only solution for me

There's also F12 -> untick "Enable Animated Images" if you're in Opera. Personally, I wish there was a way not to animate banner ads, which distract me when reading, but not smileys.
