720 scan lines take into account the black bars cropped out during encoding to save space. If you take a source (often 1080i, or 1920x1080 before cropping), crop out the black bars, and then resize it to 1280x720, you've messed up the aspect ratio of the picture. I'd know, I just did this by accident on an encode the other day. 720p videos are resized for the 1280 width, and then the black bars removed by cropping are simply added by your media player of choice if you fullscreen the video.

Actually you could crop the extra piss at the sides. Which generally have nothing of great interests. I know why the files aren't 720, but I am a stickler for techincal specs. Which those files fail in fullfilling. Which everyone seems to forgetting.

I agree actually. You have no idea how annoying it is when you are trying to "verify" torrents that are labeled as 720p when 90% of them are 1280x596 or 1280x545 or some other random crap due to someone cropping out the black bars.

720p = 1280x720 and should NOT be labeled as 720p unless it meets those obvious standards. The Scene and p2p groups seem to forget that. 720p by their standards seem to be anything 1280x???.

I'm seeing that drama is good for these trackers, seems like they want to rake in the bank. sct did it before it died, scl too. ftn and gft seem to have done it just for f***s sake, and pocket the money. what's the next trick to dupe users for their money? ;-) I wanna know, so I can do it for my tracker. I need extra money to get a 80 inch hd-led tv, then next month, what would I like to buy....

If you actually run a tracker, god be with your members. I don't know where you got the idea that slandering other sites will make yours' preferable, but that's your choice.

As I have replied to you before, being the 'stickler for technical specs', you should download untouched DVDR or Blu Ray rips and enjoy the the black bars around your movies in perfect aspect ratio.
If you do not remove the black bars before the encode you are wasting space no nothing, you are encoding useless data & would be a poor encoder for doing it, since encoding is about getting the maximum quality in both audio & video for the minimum amount of data.
If you are not prepared to understand how encoding works and what is done in preparing these movies then ca_aok's comment wasn't far from the truth:

How do you expect people to keep reading your blog with the stupid crap you post (720p, unverified irc logs)?

And you expect people to provide proof that a log is a fake - that's ridiculous.
