Thanks, skiz. I read the article, and got a good basis for what I was looking for. After that, I looked at some specific phones offered by Verizon. The data package (for 2 phones) is a big barrier right now. I even came across an article that said VWZ plans to go tiered (instead of unlimited) starting in July. I'm not sure how much data I would use, but the 2GB tier is exactly the same price as their current "unlimited" package- no plus for getting less.

Ultimately, I liked the Motorola Droid X2, and the HTC Droid Incredible 2.

Data usage shouldn't be a big worry. I've got an iPhone 4 and I'm on the internet a lot, doing everything from browsing, looking at email, watching videos, etc. I do it all, and I still don't go over that basic 2GB package that you're looking at. Below is a look at my past few months:

Alternatively, if you're looking for a phone that must be under $100 and survive the next three years, you're really not looking at much in the way of smartphones.
