in other news, i r building a media centre.

    Attachment 56770

this is the case wot i bought, gonna put an intel mini-itx board in it with an integrated atom processor, no fan just a heatsink and then maybe a slot loading optical drive and think i might have it boot off a small SSD drive and have just a seperate large 2.5 sata for all my media

trying to decide what linux distro to use though, either boxee or xmbc i think...

I built one about 8 months ago with this. It's been top notch. No complaints at all. Streams about 95% of 1080 stuffs I steal from the internets. Every once in a while I download a BluRay that it has troubles with so I get a different copy.

I put Win7 on it and run xbmc almost constantly. (wasn't aware there was a distro until you just said so )

Gonna prolly get this after the new year tho' and mount it to the back of the TV via the VESA mount.

    yo

    Noice board

I've just ordered this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Intel-Deskto...8696601&sr=8-2 which should do the jawb lyke...

tempted to try and boot off an SD card ewesing a SATA to SD converter, i like the idea of having my entire OS on a little SD card

http://www.soarland.com/SATA_to_SD_A...oduct-258.html Have any of you ever tried this? I assume it shows as just a regular SATA device in the BIOS? And im not going down the Windows route so it should be bootable? Wonder if the read/write speeds are any good though'

    oh wait a sec...

"As others have noted, the flash memory used in SSD devices is capable of withstanding MANY more reads then cheap SD/MMC cards. Every write cycle on any flash device reduces its remaining life, and flash memory cost is mostly driven by how many write cycles it can tolerate. Operating systems designed for disk media write all kinds of temp files, swap, etc., and can destroy media not designed for such usage."

"Not advisable. SD/MMC cards do not have the same transfer rates in terms of I/O speed or data error correction as SSDs. A Class 6 SD card has a top speed of 6Mbs... which is painfully slow when compared to even a 4200 rpm (low-end) notebook drive."
