The Oxford Dictionary’s annual induction of new words to the dictionary has yet again sparked controversy amongst the literary community. A number of highly contentious words have been accepted into the english lexicon much to the disgust of leading Etymologists. ‘Lol’ which is an acronym for ‘laugh out loud’ has been included alongside lmao (laugh my ass off), tgnocmrott (thank god no one caught me running over that teenager) and ihhdgmavd (I hope he didn’t give me a venereal disease).
Peter Little, the man charged with deciding which new words make the cut, claimed the additions marked a turning point in the dictionary’s much storied history. ‘We feel these new words aptly show where the English speaking community is headed. People rarely have the attention span to finish their sentences hence the increased usage of acronyms. We know the Oxford Dictionary must reflect and adapt with the times we…’
Mr. Little said he was not surprised by the level of protests upon revealing the new words. ‘Of course many people are aware of the 1947* incident but we do not fear a repeat occurrence’.

*In 1947 Godfrey Piffel-Jones, a man who held the same position as Little was mercilessly killed by those who opposed the introduction of ‘hi’ into the dictionary. He was beaten to death with the aid of several dictionaries. An amusingly ironic and sad death.
