If she already has a laptop then I wouldnt suggest an ipad. Acer makes good netbooks which have great battery life of 5+ hours and lightweight. You can also look towards Sony for an expensive and stylish option

If it's for school, consider a small tablet - they're not as expensive as you think nowadays.

If you get her a netbook, be aware that the $300 models have no cd/dvd drive so installing programs can be difficult if it's not downloaded or on a flash drive as an iso or img file. You will have to use a program like Daemon Tools to moutn the image and install it that way. The higher priced models do have a drive, I think they are a little over $500. Just a tidbit I thought I would throw out there.

the new Asus 1016 have outstanding build quality. same stays true for the samsung storm. both are higher priced. acer will soon launch the atom 550 dual core for a reasonable price so u might want to wait.

Lots of you suggested pad devices...
Can you type as fast with iPads and stuff? I have never seen someone use one in a lecture. I've seen people play games on subways/waiting around at places, and believe lots of housewives have them at home to look up recipes and stuff. But are they actually practical for work?
