So the Coens decided to remake John Wayne's Oscar winner with Jeff Bridges ( fresh off his Academy Award) as Rooster Cogburn , fellow winner Matt Damon in Glenn Campbell's good guy Texas Ranger role ,the always interesting Barry Pepper ( the sniper from Saving Private Ryan ) subbing for Robert Duvall , Josh Brolin as the "real " villain and some annoying kid replacing another annoying kid but even more annoyingly.

I don't know but as the trailer is more or less shot for shot of the original two questions

    1. Why?
    2. How come, with all that talent. it isn't anywhere near as good as the original?

Answer to 2. Whatever you think about of John Wayne , the role fit him like a glove. Here Bridges exudes none of the likability and comes off as just creepy. The movie turns around the lead and here it appears that Bridges is firing blanks.

Btw those people on youtube saying that the remake, being from the Coens is "going to be darker and more complex" . Did you even watch the trailer ?It's exactly the same.
Anyway the original was pretty friggin' dark if you think about it .

Uh, I don't know about you, but I feel like trailers very rarely represent a movie well. Most recent example for me was "Jonah Hex". Loved that trailer, movie sucked. Also heard of a similar circumstance with a movie called "Medellin". True Grit is one of my all time favorite movies, and these guys have a pretty good track record in my book. I am looking forward to seeing it in theaters.

Trailers have one function and that is to get people into the theater ,by hook or buy crook.Studios have even gone as far as to air things that aren't even in the movie and by that I mean filmed specifically for the commercial and not even in a rough cut . So anyone would be foolish to make a decision on a movie based purely by them.

Also movies with little "depth" tend to make for better trailers since everything they represent can more or less be told in 30 seconds . Conversely it's hard to represent what you get from say ,Rashomon in a half minute.

Obviously the trailer ( for True Grit ) is not the movie but the point that I was trying to make in my first post is that it ( being apparently so faithful to the original) is that comparatively it paled in comparison.Especially Bridges to Wayne.
I'm not saying that it will be a terrible movie or even that Bridges won't end up hitting it out of the park and make everyone forget about the Duke .I just saw the trailer ,thought maybe somebody else might be interested and added my impressions ,that is all.

    Btw remakes/track record /classics

Seriously you thought that Jonah Hex looked good in the trailer?
Which part the stinted dialogue ,the terrible action sequences or the wooden acting?

    Wait let me guess.

Yeah, I have never seen ANY value in remaking an original- especially shot-for-shot. Hell, I could do that. Gimme a DVD and a camera and a few million dollars, and I promise to make something without its own merit.

Haha, that probably was the part that made me think Jonah Hex would be good. Regarding True Grit, like I said, I place a lot of moviegoer trust in these guys. Hold big doubts that it will be a 'shot-for-shot' remake, and I feel like Bridges is going to dominate. In fact, the only character in that trailer I was hesitant about is the girl. The original actress dominated that role.
