Less is definitely more when suspense is the driving force. Knowing something is going to happen in that film (like with the durr-duh durr-duh in Jaws) just made me more tense.
Not sure I could watch no.2 as the ad shows a toddler and kids coming to harm always kinda mentally freaks me out.
Though having said that, the ending of Stephen King's The Mist was as perfect as it was disturbing.
For slashers and making you jump, I agree that the original Halloween is hard to beat.

The Messengers, Mirrors and The Grudge.
Paranormal activity is the best!
Japanese version of The Ring. So much better than the cra*** American copy. Second suggestion would be Event Horizon
