We're planning on buying one of them soon, mainly for just driving around town. At this point we're leaning in favor of the Nissan Leaf because it is all electric and has enough of a driving range to easily reach Pinetop-Lakeside and Show Low, our major driving destination on an almost daily basis. The total cost to us is going to be about $25,000, which is surprisingly reasonable for what we are getting.

They look cool, but I think Tesla Roadster is still the best looking electric car

I have heard of a company doing battery upgrades to these electric cars and getting 400+ miles on a single charge, been on the news and stuff awhile back. You might want to check into.

Thanks for the info. We will definitely look into doing a battery upgrade for it while we are waiting to get one. They are already out of reservations for the Nissan Leaf and so, we have to wait until Spring to reserve one, but we are now registered to be notified when one becomes available. I'm excited about getting to drive an all-electric car. This should be very interesting.

No problem. Actually it might of been 600 miles or so on one charge. I know it was over 400. It cost around $4k, at the time IIRC, to do but your overall gas savings paid for that and then some if you think about it.


Edit: My bad. It was a hybrid that saw that got that.

Any electric car that depends on batteries is a total dead end.
The technology to create a battery with enough energy density to be useful does not exist and our current infrastructure (i.e., electric grid) couldn't support them even if such batteries existed.
If ten of my neighbors bought Prius's (?) and plugged them in after work, the local transformer would blow and the whole neighborhood would go dark.
Throttle their charging current down to a safe level and it'd take two days to recharge the car...not terribly useful.

Hydrogen powered electric cars look promising but the technology to produce hydrogen economically isn't very mature either.
Not to mention the "Hindenburg effect", which will be difficult to overcome.

I don't care whether it solves the world's energy crisis. It's gonna be a lot fun to drive around.

I wouldn't use it for any long road trips. Just zipping around town, and maybe going over to one of my cousins' home in Pinetop. If necessary, I would charge up at their house before going back to Eagar.
