Pioneer has a dual-layer DVD-R format in the works--

Philips has a dual-layer DVD+R format in the works--

interesting that the two companies made their announcements (for two competing formats, of course) on the same day.

Sounds like the DVD+R version is ready now and is supported by the DVD+RW alliance, but the -R version still needs some work and has yet to be presented to the DVD Forum.

It seems likely that the Pioneer press release was rushed out after the Phillips/MKM announcement, although it is possible that the latter intended to surprise the market but had to bring it's announcement forward.

Starting in April! I guess I'll wait another 5 months. I just hope the price of the blank media is not exorbitant.

Expect double-layer, almost double-capacity DVD+R drives and media to hit the stores next April, members of the DVD+RW alliance say.

The technology, co-developed by drive maker Philips, and media specialists Verbatim and Mitsubishi Kagaku, adds a second recording layer to a standard-thickness DVD+R disc, taking the medium's capacity from 4.7GB to 8.5GB.

In which case you aren't going to be burning dual-layer discs.
