Thread: Play video downloads while you are downloading them?

  1. #1
I see that Alt.Binz has a 'NZB Play' feature that lets you watch files while they are still downloading, but the feature only works properly if you pay for the latest updates. Is there a free way of running files while they are still downloading? Do any of the other newsreaders have this option?

Not tried this for a long time. The issue I recall is if there is a corrupt rar file it will stop playing.

The problem with streaming video off usenet is that the files need to be 100% complete. (So don't even think about trying to stream a HBO show from Giganews) Although par2's will fix incomplete files, they can only be employed after all the rar files have already been downloaded, so par2 files are useless when it comes to streaming video.

NZB-Player is a good application. It's completely free and it basically does the job. But the project has been dormant for a long time, and there are still a few small unresolved issues. For instance; no SSL support, no fill-server support, and (a small issue) the fact that the order of rar files must be manually checked and arranged before it will work.

I found this and thought I'd give it a try. Has anyone used it before?

I've tried it in like 2007 when VLC couldn't natively play shit inside rars. Basically it's useless because no NZB downloader that I know of organizes the parts in proper order (so that it'd download the part1.rar first, then part2.rar etc).

For the same reason great projects like http://code.google.com/p/stream-unrar/ just fail.

Personally, I use WinRAR to extract the video (with the keep broken archive option on). Then, I play it using GOMPlayer

Sabnzbd 0.6.0 final has experimental support for this feature. I haven't tried it as I've never had the need.

I'd advice you to check which section this thread is on.

streamreactor works pretty well. it would be so awesome if somebody could make like a couch potato + streamreactor + xbmc combo. like you add movies through couch potato and when there available you can play them instantly through xbmc. It would be like netflix but SO much better.
