you will loose every thing when you format boss, save what ever you like, if your programs and documents are on a different partition then your os and the partition that has your os is the only one you are formating then you loose nothing

Yes, backup everything you want to keep.

then is the format included within the xp disc?
Yes, just insert the CD and turn on the power to bootup from the CD. The partitioning and formatting tools are right there before the setup starts.

If you format and reinstall Windows then you will loose everything including your Antivirus.

    Does that answer your question?

When he says everything, he means everything.

Up to , and including, your sense of pride and quite possibly your sanity, also.

yes, thank you Virtualbody. i was sort of thinking that that might be what happens.

and clocker, i'm trully beginning to learn that. don't really have any sanity to lose but my pride is already beginning to hurt. i'm one of those stubborn people that doesn't really like to ask for help, but after having to reformat my hardrive once on this pc and once on another one...i really didn't want to go through that again, hence i crawl meekly to all of you. and you have all been exceptionally helpfull. thank you.

....but i still like mrs. bates' little boy. he does have an eye for talent. and apparently knows how to pay them....otherwise he wouldn't keep getting them. the only other place i can think of wanting to work if i had the talent is pixar.

I have an idea for you, GhostInTheSystem.

Before you format and loose everything there is another option. It will allow you to get yourself familiar with the installation of Windows XP without erasing your current setup.

Unplug your current harddrive and put it aside.

Buy another harddrive and install it in your PC. You can then install XP and if at some point you run into problems you can just stop and unplug it.

You can plug your first drive back in and you're back with all you configurations untouched.

It's just an idea to take away all the fear when venturing into the unknown.

Whatever you do don't extract the files from the image and the burn the CD with the extracted files. The CD won't be bootable if you do that.

Just burn directly from the .iso to get a bootable CD.
I downloaded windows 2000 and it wouldnt boot so i downloaded an original boot disk for it and extracted all the files from the cd, booted up nero and made a bootable cd.

I used the boot image from the floppy.

Im sure you can do this with windows XP ive never tried.
