Thread: Pentium 4 Extreme Edition At 3.40ghz And Pentium 4

  1. #1
Intel Corporation has reportedly reformed its CPU roadmap once again, adding some more powerful 0.13 micron processors, but staying rather tight-lipped concerning the higher-end 90nm CPUs ramp up in early 2004.

Sources close to Intel are reporting about two new microprocessors for Socket 478 infrastructure to emerge in the first quarter 2004. The first processor will be Intel Pentium 4 Extreme Edition at 3.40GHz with 2MB of L3 cache, the second one will be the Intel Pentium 4 processor at 3.40GHz with 512KB of L2 cache. Both chips will be produced using Intel’s mature 0.13 micron technology and will feature 800MHz Quad Pumped Bus being compatible with existing i865 and i875P infrastructure.

At the same time – presumably in Q1 2004 – Intel is projected to also roll-out its Pentium 4 processor with SSE3 technology (Prescott) processor at 2.80GHz with 1MB of L2, 533MHz Quad Pumped Bus and no HT technology indicated. In the second quarter the company is very likely to unveil a version of this 90nm CPU for LGA775 platform as well

It looks like Intel will be behind AMD for a while longer than they anticipated...how much faster can the P4 go?

About 4.6Ghz, from what I have heard among alot of the Pentium Overclockers. With a ride range of P4's, all on the northwood core these days, have all topped about at the most at 4.6Ghz.

So it looks like thats the ceiling for Intel, and they usually like to keep atleast a 1Ghz gap on their processors highest clock speed. Which means that those 3.4's, or 3.6's are going to be the last of the P4s.

Just going to have to wait and see though.

I think that the 4.6 thing is a bit of a fluke or at least it is not a real time clock speed for the average joe, even with water cooling etc etc I can believe there is stability at 3.5 GHz but past that its risky.

this saga of the pentium line has been fun to watch! i wonder what the public reaction will be top the end of P4 (i say this because i work with a group of idiots who don't know anything, and think that pentium is just of the shelf better then anything else imaginable... ) but this should be a few intresting months, as 64 bit is phased in, and new chip layouts are put forth by both "superpower" chip makers, this coming year will be very intresting indeed...
