Windows 7 x64 is your best choice right now.

If you have compatibility problems, grab vmware workstation and build yourself a 32bit 2000 box. Or a DOS box for the really old stuff.

Windows XP is old news, too many people still clinging to it.

Unfortunately Windows XP does not see my 3 TB disk. That's why I like big fan of games had to switch to Windows 7 x64. My video card supports DirectX 11 and I just threw away win xp. This operating system is long gone.

For modern gaming yes of course WinXP only supports DirectX9 officially (it can be hacked for DX10), but there are older games that will not run on Win7 (even in compatibility mode).
XP 64 was never that stable and required special drivers so is not a good choice but XP 32bit was and still is fine. The OS will be supported by Microsoft until end of life in 2014.
For maximum compatibility you are better to run Win7 X64 (to address larger memory blocks) and if you need the compatibility with older OS's run a Virtualising solution such as VMWare workstation.
