My Philosophy is simple. Why add all the junk when all one want to do is watch a video or listen to music. The old KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) rule applies here. In my mind there exists only two worthy multimedia apps for Windows. Winamp and VLC Media Player. The only other player I use is Media Player Classic - Home Theatre. With exception of the latter, which is newer, I have not had any reason to use anything else for several years. Real player, quicktime have n place in my place. They both have been substituted with Real and QT Alternative.
For Linux and MACS generally the native players are more than efficient. That opinion is purely based on the suggestion of others seeing I do not use either, well not yet but the MAC is looking more attractive every day.
