That restriction was lifted (around late 2009 or early 2010, don't remember). You can now download any torrent and even search their database as a guest. Before that, only torrents from the last seven days would be available.
Just for the record, I'm not saying he shouldn't have an account, but "I'd really appreciate it" suggests he's looking for something he believes may be on Demonoid, and so I suggested that.
