"my Pictures"

This happened recently but I don't know how or why?
My OS is WinXP.I didn't change any of the settings on my computer.
I just noticed one day that I can only save pictures as a .bmp.This is quite annoying since this stops me from saving animated .gifs on my comp. And whatever picture I save on my comp from the net doesn't take over the original name it has on the net.They all show up as nameless.
Does anybody know what happenend or how I can make it change again so I can save pictures as .gifs,jpg,....again.'Cause I sure don't know how this happened.
