Does your laptop have an ethernet jack like the one in this picture?

thats not an rj45 socket its a picture of the tool use use to put them in

If you have a network socket on your laptop and a network card or onboard lan on your tower then all you really need is a crossover cable, you can buy a one at any decent pc shop, If you have xp on either machines, life is incredibly simple if you are running 98 pm me and i'll write you up a full guide, it's not particularly hard but It's a while since I set up a 98 network

it is always on, i'm in UK. But when i change broadband TCP/IP settings to 192.168.0.1, it says effects wont take place until u disconnect and redial and it fails to redial. On my second computer, connected by crossover, on the Internet Gateway it says that it is connected to my Internet, but when i open the internet browser on that computer, it says cannot find server.
