Good news, VLC and Media Player Classic Home Cinema are the best
I hope to see 64-bit version of VLC in the near future

Add this to your sources.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:n-muench/vlc2
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install vlc

Doesn't work, I had already attempted that one.
It continues reporting 1.1.6 as the latest available version.
