It's not so much that the internet is fuck, but that the US is fucked.
The ordinary person in the US is being fucked over and over again by the big corporations and the government, in the name of profit. After all, why give something away when you can sell it and make a profit.
Take Aaron Swartz, who advocated freedom of information and was fighting to keep the internet neutral. The government labelled him as a felon and he finally took his own life through desperation. I find it amazing that someone who was so obviously NOT a criminal could be labelled alongside serial killers and terrorists and other undesirables.
This is how the US crush those who oppose their capitalist ideals. They don't want a free internet. They want total control, and they are gradually gaining it, bit by bit. Eventually, they will control all content, and charge you for the privilege of viewing that content.
So, what is the next step in this control process? Well, licensing website operators so that we all need permission to run our own websites. I can see this happening, with unlicensed websites being treated as terrorist portals, and their owners treated as such.
Net Neutrality? That vanished when congress became just another arm of the big corporations. After all, if they can monitor the phones of the world leaders, then crushing us is no effort at all.

On a technological level, the internet is not indispensable anymore. Let the capitalist zombies have their fucked-up virtual reality, with Google and Fakebook keeping them hooked to the "cloud" consumerist nirvana while running mega-Stazi operations on the background. People who know better than that are setting up their own networks and continue the shift of power from authority to the individual. The real battleground won't be in doing restorative work on a broken internet, but in building another one from scratch.
