These compounds have a similar ability to alkylate DNA, but their physical properties, e.g. melting point, vary.

Rather I think Idol was calling out to me due to my absence in this thread, at least that's how I was approaching the excerpt. At first I thought I was reading about an aggressive chemotherapy technique until I saw that it alkylates guanine indiscriminately, then thinking, "what are they trying to do, kill people?". I finally reached the later portion of it and realized it was describing the mechanism by which mustard gas is harmful. Did any of you, any at all, bother to read it? I won't say that it's poorly written, but it could be much improved.

I carry two lethal weapons in my house, my left elbow and my right knee. I've only handled an unloaded handgun once, after my Texan neighbor's friend accidentally fired a round into his floor (instead of through the drywall leading to my bedroom).

Didn't have to, I realised that it was a descriptor of the mechanism by which its harmful by the title. It even says toxicity.
I'm surprised it took you til the latter portion of it to glean this information.
