It definitely wasn't because I know stuff about telly or movies but in one of the episodes, Castiel said that he'd brought them back after they'd got themselves killed 'hundreds of times' because they were important. So. indefinitely.
Back to the mod question, I think it was because I've got dirt on Skizo.

thank you mr idoleyes tbh i drifted off to sleep well before the end of the show
and just awoke to see dean with the born again angel at the end and thought what just happened there........ i suppose it will become much more clearer next season
