So far Ubuntu 12.04 and 11.10 have given me some issues. 11.10 mostly with screen tearing with many different drivers. Was trying to use the integrated may have been the issue. Now i have network manager crashes, vpn will not connect, and updating problems.

All I need the box to do is store torrents, home theatre, and a vent server Any ideas?

Clearly I would go for CentOS.
It's quite good for servers, and it's based on RHEL. Its package manager is also quite great.
