If, by classic you mean masterpiece, then Pan's Labyrinth is well up there.

I'm personally going with the definition that a "classic" film is one that has timeless appeal.
That leaves room for old and new movies and also those that failed to find a wide audience or even critical acclaim when first released.
Or maybe the best way to consider the term "classic" is that while you may not be able to precisely define what it is,you still know it when you see it.

I don't know even a little about English cinema, but out of the very few gems I have seen "Scarface 1983" is my personal favorite.
