Funny, I recall reading somewhere that feedback was so positive to the point they were saturated of the praise. And allegedly the band was considered a symbol of Americana and traditional values, even though Richard voted to legalize pot Anyway, have another.
The original Beatles version of this had such a cheery arrangement, you weren't completely sure this was supposed to be a sad song. The cover brings the mood in line with the actual lyrics.

Something being praised and at the same time shit on isn't mutually exclusive. Google "top musical groups 1972" to get some sense of the general mood of the US for that period. I don't think Alice Cooper fans were falling all over themselves for a 45 of Rainy Days and Mondays.
