You can play by climbing,you can play baseball,play the violin,you can play tiddlywinks but you can't "play climbing".

Oddly you also can't play showjumping or car racing or track and field or cycling even though they are all sports.

Language is funny and sometimes doesn't seem to make a whole lot of cents.
Whoever thought it up certainly has a hole lot to answer to.
