There are multi format DVD±R drives.

My recommendation: The LG GSA- 4040B

cd rom = read only normal cd's

    dvd rom = read dvd's and cd's

    cd-r/w = read and write to cd's

DVD burners have gotten so cheap, just a year ago, 400 bucks was about the cheapest you could find one, now I've seen them on pricewatch for like 85 dollars. I remember when Cd burners first came out, and even those didn't have such price drops, as relative to time, as DVD burners have.

First CD burner I bought was a Smart & Friendly 4X, $250, and it was on Sale, I think that was 97' or 98'.
    Still works though.

I just wish the DVD burners out now, would burn cds faster, most seem to only burn cds at 12x - 20x.

DVD+R and -R are just two different standards, different companies are pushing different standards, personally I always use +R, but just choose which ever one your stand alone DVD player will support.

@ raiserblade2003, to tell you the truth i wouldnt have a clue what the difference is. I would have a search for it but there is no need because most good dvd burners do both anyways.

@ mooseman2070, dont feel stupid. I remember when i didnt have a pc (a long long time ago) at my school i though you could back up your homework on a blank cd with just a normal cd rom
