Because a properly configured Usenet setup with multiple block accts and multiple indexers with automated programs will get you the latest releases much quicker without the hassle of torrent sites. Unless you just plan on streaming, you have to download it once from the torrent site and download it again (ftp) from your seedbox. BTW: $15.00 a month gets you both the usenet accounts (primary and back up blocks) and the indexers (primary and backups).

Why do you bother with Usenet if torrents are so great? Why not just get everything from torrents?

Try one of the free servers mentioned on this site. I must use 4 or 5 Tier 1 servers and rarely have a problem with anything.
Who needs cloud storage when you got the NSA?

I enjoy Usenet because of the way it works and the lack of interaction with others. You just drag and drop and it starts downloading. The thing is, Usenet simply doesn't have all the content. A good sports tracker has very NFL and big College football game, plus the NFL Network and MLB Network shows and more. That can't be said for Usenet. If you like MMA, you get the UFC and Bellator, but an MMA torrent site gives you those plus another 5 or 6 shows as well over a 2 week period. The same applies for movies, music, and television in general. Lots of cable tv shows never get posted on Usenet, but they're there on good specialty torrent trackers. As far as speed goes, it takes maybe 15 minutes for things to propagate on Usenet. In that time, you can download a 720 hour long show from a site bot (2 minutes), and get it to your computer from a seedbox in 10 if you have a decently fast connection. So before it even shows on Usenet, you're watching it. I like both, and you can spread your money among both, rather than underrate torrents.

I tried torrents for highly specialized OOP movies. Among the ones I remember:

    KaraGarga

    THC (horror movies)

    Gormogon

    Secret-Cinema

There are others but I can't remember all the names.

The small specialty torrent sites often have the exact opposite problem that large public sites have. You could have the fastest seedbox in the world but you need leechers to build up a buffer. This means that you spend too much time seeding crap (free leech stuff) you don't want just so you can build up a decent buffer to get the stuff you do want. It can take a month to build up a decent buffer on the small trackers even with a seedbox.

I am aware of the MMA and sports torrent sites. I compared some private MMA site to the public sites and found that they did not have the latest MMA PPV match any sooner than TPB or some Russian tracker. They do get it faster than Usenet but downloading a brand new torrent can be slow since there are not enough seeders as soon as it hits the torrent site. I will admit that if you want highly specialized stuff that you will find more of it on torrents than Usenet. Example: If somebody wanted UFC PPV # 86, I'm sure the specialty trackers would have it. It's doubtful you will ever find it on Usenet.

Even if it's possible to get the latest G.O.T. faster on some torrent site, I would not care. The automated programs used with Usenet and indexers work just fine for me. If it downloads something at 4 a.m. my time, I don't care if some guy on a torrent site got it 10 minutes earlier. I won't be up to watch it anyway.

On balance, I found torrents to be a PITA compared to Usenet.

I don't know, I found it rather easily.

LOL.............I guess that's not rare enough. I never bothered to check since I came up with it off the top of my head. There are definitely some OOP movies that private trackers had that I could not find on Usenet. At any rate, I think there is enough on Usenet to satisfy 98% of the people. If I am missing anything, it's not important enough to me to use torrents again.

I think that the lack of the content mentioned earlier in this thread is because the people that are looking for this kind of content lack the appropriate skills to successfully post it to the Usenet without using methods that scream - TAKE ME DOWN I'M PAY PER-VIEW. Plus that stuff is a bit like Nascar racing, not everyone is into it. IMHO there are a lot of people using the Usenet without even fully understanding what they are doing or even what Usenet is all about- this put a lot of attention (Good and Bad) on the Usenet.

Getting back on topic and to the OP's question, you should have a dutch backup provider for you fills for missing articles - they are not subject to takedown laws, I use one along with Newshosting as my primary and never have any issue. Now occasionally you will run into garbage nzbs if you are using one of these many flavors of newznab indexers floating around, be warned they are not all created equal.

I've had a Usenet-provider account for the last 9 years and it's served me well for almost everything I could want in the form of digital data. Rarely is there every something I'm after that doesn't already exist on a newsgroup somewhere. As far as DMCA goes, the provider makes all the difference. Giganews used to be great up until the last few years or so.

[Empahsis added] This is rubbish. I've said it before and I'll say it again THIS IS NOT A TECHNICAL REALITY. Period. Sorry dude.

Once propagated it's technically beyond control edit: 'it's beyond all technical control of the original master/provider'.

Just like the NSA, I'm compelled to copy everything I want to.
