Just bought 4x12TB WD externals that I'm going to shuck and throw in my NAS. That's only to backup all these random 2.5" externals. Hopefully I can find a dupecheck for Synology that checks crc and call it a day.
36TB usable is peasant change I know but it scares me about the future of my hoarding abilities. Especially knowing I'll have to 'upgrade' all the SD stuff one day.
The question i have asked others... What percentage of stuff you have accumulated have you really watched??

I started a while back upgrading a bunch of stuff to 720p or higher, and i can tell you that i am not using more space because i end up deleting shit that i know now that i will never watch.. And i am talking stuff i downloaded years and years ago and really forgot i even saved it....

Really i have gotten back Terra bytes of space upgrading, the only problem is it is a pain in the ass going through all the shit!!!...

I assume you are running PLEX on your Synology?
Other than having great menu/sorting feature Plex sucks shit on muxing/streaming original quality rips, it downgrades them be it picture quality or sound.. Again there is some better programs out there that work better out there that don't do that to playback....

That's not my experience. Everything streamed on my local network is set to play in original quality; if PLEX can direct-play the file format and doesn't have to transcode it's as good as it gets. x264 is not a problem, which is also part reason why I stay away from x265.

Streaming outside to my phone or to friends with guest accounts gets downgraded to 720p (streams original quality if it's 720p or less). So far nobody has been complaining.

If you are happy with it Cabby, i am not knocking it for users, it always depends on your setup right?? I have been tinkering with a few different internal streaming programs, Plex does not keep the original file format and play it, Do you have a surround sound setup to test that?? Or have you tried any other program to see the difference?? Chances are no, and i don't blame you because you are happy with and how it operates. Try pushing a true BD rip (50-80gigs), and see what it does?? It won't work properly especially the sound sampling..
Emby is far better and still is UMS and there is a few more as well , but the problem with all of them, they don't have the same indexing screens/setups that Plex has..

Again it just depends on what you have in a setup and what you are looking for?? I would never say it is not a good starter program that is easy to use and gives and average person a great experience. But it is not the greatest for upgraded sound systems or broadcasting true 4k images?? And really it is nice that they do send out frequent upgrades and bug fixes. I still don't have it running the way i have others in my house ..

Maybe my post came across that the program is bad Cabby, that is not my intention, but i will say it is not the best for true surround setups, that's all..

Really you could talk to multiple people and they are looking for different performances of there equipment, and if you put a true 4k video vs a 1080p and your sound setup be it Atmos or DTS or Dolby 7.1 (THX) etc vs say tv speakers or sound bar??. Plex is not the program for it....

Don't subblock encoding is great, 10bit not so much on some of my early Pi but you do get the benefits on a 3b+

Um... I have a 4 TB Seagate external drive that's barely 50% full... and I have already assumed I won't finish dealing with all the stuff in there within my lifetime

4TB? That's barely 650 movies. I could watch that in a day or two.

Well, some of us abide by the laws of physics and can't do that.
