Yea, those spam emails are stupid. I have never signed up to Facebook, Instagram, logged into any porn or dating sites, don't have a webcam (would put electrical tape over it, if I did), no microphones.

I watched a special on TV about people who believe those scams and send money. Then then have to send more money because some other issue pops up. Very sad!

After reading this, I unplugged both my laptop's microphone and speakers... due to placement and size, all laptop speakers sound as great as a crunched soda can anyway. I heard someone went even one step further and soldered a resistor to his audio pins, to be absolutely sure they were unusable.

On a desktop computer you can just disconnect or turn them off when unused.
