Parliament must vote on whether the UK can start the process of leaving the EU, the High Court has ruled.

This means the government cannot trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty - beginning formal exit negotiations with the EU - on its own.

Theresa May says the referendum - and existing ministerial powers - mean MPs do not need to vote, but campaigners called this unconstitutional.

The government is appealing, with a further hearing expected next month.

Brexiteer in June - We want to restore Parliamentary Sovereignty.
Brexiteer in November - NOT LIKE THIS!

If the Supreme Court rejects the appeal, I wonder if they will then appeal to the European Court of Justice...

    Baron Thomas of Cwmgiedd ftw.

Not sure what exactly this means beyond the obvious, but from what little I can glean it still seems like we're heading for brexit. MPs won't want to be seen voting to remain, going against a referendum result is politically dangerous for them on a personal level. Just what kind of brexit we're heading for is now the question which will probably dominate the coming months, providing the appeal fails.
It makes the 'hard brexit' option a lot less likely, as parliament won't get a vote through on that. Even that grinning abhorrence Farage as much as admitted this.
The other member states are beyond Eurovision levels of fucked off at the UK about this, all this dithering is pissing them off en masse, so they aren't likely to agree to anything resembling a 'soft brexit'. 'medium brexit' is something I have never heard anyone say before but is what now has to happen.

Getting 300+ MPs to agree on something this complex will be pretty tricky. I reckon it'll take much longer than what's left of the current term of the PM.
About five years doesn't sound unrealistic.

The problem being is that while our economy overall is relatively unaffected by this uncertainty, it is already ruinous for UK companies who exclusively trade internationally.
No-one wants to deal with them now. I represent a few companies who do this and all of them are talking of chucking it in.

Not only do 300+ MPs have to agree on something, whatever they agree with then has to be negotiated and agreed with the 27 other EU countries, who have already said that "soft Brexit" isn't an option.

I can't see a trade agreement being done in 2 years, even if both sides were vaguely accommodating to each other, which they aren't.

They need to abandon the idea of a trade agreement as part of the article 50 negotiations, and concentrate on the legal and cultural aspects of Brexit, then sort out trade deals once we're out.

At some point, the dithering and uncertainty becomes more damaging than Brexit itself, because basically we're in limbo until it actually comes into effect.

It would be so much easier to just stay in, really...

Teresa May has pretty much entrenched herself now.
If staying in is an option (and I'm not sure it would be humanly possible to keep that much egg on a face) then we need a brave new hero to win a general election.

Corbyn has similarly said that we have to go coz the people voted as such, so he's no good - plus he's unelectable.
Clegg's got the balls but he was made a bit of a monkey of re. the coalition. No point even debating the merits of the faceless lego-brick opposition, nor the toothless tory back-benchers.
Politicians won't do. All of them have made a career out of ostensible public servitude, to fly against that is tantamount to consigning their life's work to the dustbin.

None of them have a public profile which could withstand such a position.
Ken Clarke is the only one who comes close, but he is too old and too disinterested now.

If America has a left wing version of Trump, then could you please send him or her over? thnx in advance.

That appears to be a fairly accurate summation.

If she loses this appeal which as far as I can tell is more than likely, that's going to be incredibly embarrassing for her, and may even lead to a vote of no confidence and an election. But then with no opposition... bleurgh.

The nearest thing we have to an opposition at the moment in this country is Gary Lineker.
