Ventilation Fan Failure

My cusion needs help with her PC. It's an HP pavilion. When she turns her PC on, it says

Ventilation fan failure: PC may overheat
Switch off PC and verify for connector

Now I know that can't be good!

I couldn't fix her problem, and HP wanted $30 for Tech support and $340 for repair!!!

I was hoping you guys can help, I don't want my cusion paying $340 to repair her PC.

Open up the computer case and look inside. Look for the fan somewhere near the middle of the motherboard. Turn on the PC for a very short time and observe that fan. Does it spin? If not try to remove the fan and take it with you to a local PC store to find a replacement. It should be less than $20.

These machines are not a big mystery. They fit together a bit like Lego.

well lucky u... my fan broke!.... well on my moms computer.... it fried up.... no warning, well maybe there was one but my father doesn't know how to read he knoes how to use the internet tho, lol... so i got a new one for 22 dollars...

Well, all wires and cables are connected, and the fan spins normally.

And yet, it still doesn't work. It doesn't seem broken, so I'm not sure if she should have it replaced if the fan is works. Any other ideas???

Check the BIOS battery

The speed sensor curcuit is probably faulty. Change the fan unit or turn off speed monitoing in the CMOS settings.

All the above comments are good.

Another option is to get a can of compressed air (at a pc store or costco sometimes have them).
Then clean the inside of the computer well, especially cleaning the fan unit.

One of my fans went out a few years ago and lucky for me I got
the computer at a local company.... so even though the warranty
was over by 2 weeks, they still replaced it for free and labor was free also.
