A great american football wide receiver who played for the Pittsburgh Steelers for many years. The guy does seems to be a real a$$hole.

But then American society does have this almost unique ability to exalt it's assholes and decry it's actual heroes.

Btw are there any American football players who haven't committed a violent crime? Not saying that the encouragement of unbridaled aggression, rampant steriod use and head trauma use make for a bad mix or anything.

If you really think about it Idol... Why do you think NFL Football has such a short season, plus i am pretty sure that education is not a prerequisite, all based on talent, and it is a big business in the US buddy both in college schools and out... Just remember the stadiums in colleges are way bigger than actual NFL's, and really it is a automatic pass in academics...

American society is screwed up when it comes to celebrity and idol worship. Only a small percentage of American football players have committed a violent crime. It just seems like a lot because of the attention it gets. I think the players that commit violent crimes have more issues than just football culture. It definitely plays a big part. The talented and successful players are treated like gods beginning at an early age. They are treated differently than everybody else. It can create a warped sense of entitlement.

Many football players are actually pretty smart. Granted the majority of them not so much. But they are football smart (which is harder than most people think). Many of them could be well educated if they just put the time and effort into it (what they put into football). Football is a big business. That's why college players should get paid. The colleges make huge money from sports.

The football season used to be shorter. They actually plan the length and timing of the season so their is as little overlap with other professional sports. High ratings means big advertising dollars.

It's a fairly small population pool so it only takes a few to make a decent percentage of offenders compared to other sports. Granted entitlement probably plays some small part but then why aren't there then a bunch of Brazilian soccer players up on assault charges?
As for being "football smart", shock a rat enough times and it will figure out the fastest way through a maze. To be fair most football players have vastly better lateral mobility than a rat though.

Btw college players are being taken advantage of but probably less so than your average intern. The problem with the inequality doesn't lie completely on the colleges now does it?

Yes! When it concerns sports and money.

The main reason for a short season is injuries in a full contact sport, again saying that if someone without scandals comes up with a billion dollars plus for a franchise, you will see a new NFL team added....

Even know it was a safe thing to say "lateral mobility" LOL!!! You do have to have natural instincts and ability to start with Idol and you know that.. What is that saying "You can teach anyone to fish"?? but any sports with human opponents is not the same.. It is like everyone can learn how to ride a bicycle, but you do skills to race at a high level. If you take how many amateurs even in hockey, yes they are great players, but not NHL levels, and going to watch many many hockey games in Barrie (Barrie Colts), man did they have skills but you could see the ones that had a chance to make it, and they were many steps behind to jump on the ice with the Leaf's , way more coaching and pushing the limits were needed, but they did start with raw talent and the understanding of the game. That was the reason i posted the Vince Papale photo, there is a bartender that had raw talent and just needed to be refined but others did try out in the movie if you watch, and could run like they just robbed a liquor store, but zero instincts of there surroundings...

I don't understand this??, but i will reverse this and say not only is the college going to be noticed and get more funding, but they are taking a person that may not be academically inclined, but he or she is getting a free ride in most cases to be noticed by a pro team that could make them set for life financially, and get a education to boot....
I know you have a problem with that Idol, but the families that can't afford to send some of these kids to college don't. Saying that, not all rich people/families have there kids become professional sports athletes at a high level, as a matter of fact depending on the sport very few do.......
EG. What did Tiger Woods father do for a living?? Raw talent hard work and perseverance from a sport that didn't accept a African American so fast in the sport.. All positive and even with his scandals, and not to leave out he gives not only his time but gazillions to charities, and he is still the most popular in his sport, win or lose, go figure

Most college football players don't make it to the NFL. Even if they do, most enter NFL before graduating and don't even last 3 years. And now the owners have it so rookies don't get paid much. Most players will never see "set for life" money. And most college athletes don't graduate if professional sports doesn't work out.
