hey balamm - heres some screenies of the way my font browser works. i should say that this is illustrator 10 btw (full disc from the nice chaps at the market before i found this place ), though i dont think cs is any different with this
this one is using the 'Character' menu - not sure if its shown by default so 'Window' menu > check 'Character' - i can use the scroll bar to the right and use the mouse wheel
and this one is from the 'Font' menu, you say you can only see 3 windows at a time, if i click on 'More' at the top then another one pops up till i run through them all (more than 3 windows worth but not quite as many as you )
so i dunno what could be up with yours, if you want this version of 10 then let me know. had a look on some forums and all people were saying was that they were pissed that with CS, they hadnt included a scroll in the main font window like in photoshop, nothing about not showing all fonts. some folks also mentioned the 'adobe type manager' to give them more options but i dont use it myself
ps - that plugin-manager you were thinking of, there is a thing called 'Photoshop Starter', its freeware and supposedly lets you set up different plugin directories that you can select among other things before starting up - but every d/l link i've followed takes me to their homepage:
http://www.icnet.de/ - they do have a thing called 'plugin manager' but i dont think its the same as 'photoshop starter'
and i dont see any mention of it never mind a link it does exist tho' according to google - photoshop starter
hope you have more luck finding a working link than i did

It's so good to see people sharing again. Our poor little forum has been kinda left behind in that regard lately, over policed maybe? The http's and ftp's are out there. It's a shame to waste that.
I have a bunch of direct download links for the TDA release of Photoshop CS if anyone is still looking for it.
The paradox release kinda sucks.

But it's not very difficult to find them, with ftp search engines.
