This. My philosophy is the same. The rare stuff that you can't find on a private or public tracker needs to be out there and spread around for anyone who wants it. But I don't upload to public trackers. Simply because it gives people the excuse to download and then stop seeding the file.
On a private tracker (especially ratio based ones) you can have retention cos you have to seed the file. The plus point is that even the rare stuff gets well seeded which in turn give you the chance to keep your ratio healthy.

Well, the choices don't need to be mutually exclusive. Just make sure to either recreate your public torrents with a different info_hash or seed them from a separate client to avoid the infamous "add multiple announce URLs, get banned for apparent ratio cheating" situation. You never know which ones will stick around the longest... sometimes the answer will surprise you.
Of course, that's assuming your connection speed is decent enough to keep up with two swarms per upload and you don't live in a country where you can get copyright raped for seeding public torrents. You may have to compromise otherwise.
Posting to Usenet is another good idea, but comes with its own set of idiosyncrasies.

I cross seed. I have no issues with it. I also tend to seed what i upload for as long as I can but then I have so much content I want to share that keeping a lot of it seeding on my laptop isn't possible.
Sure I know seedboxes are out there but nope. I'm just too old fashioned that way and won't spend money for that shit just to get stats. Cos that's all that seedboxes are good for IMHO.
Usenet... Uh no thanks. I'm ok with torrenting. It's been working for me for .... 6 years? Man I can't even remember. I haven't been torrenting as much as many other people here or on most private trackers but I've come to learn and understand quite a bit and it just works for me.
This and inactivity policies may be why I've trimmed my tracker database significantly over the years
If you value retention, Usenet is a force to be reckoned with, however. Imagine downloading something from 10 years ago at maximum speed.Usenet... Uh no thanks. I'm ok with torrenting. Well honestly why should I spend money to just earn stats? It's just does not make any sense for me to pay money for them because if you're doing it for the stats, ratio and bump in user classes then you're doing it wrong or atleast for the wrong reasons. Well thats my opinion anyway.
I barely use private trackers. I just use two of them and the rest I don't even know how long it's been since I've logged on to them.
Nah I think I'm ok with torrenting. As for retention I know it's important but I seed what I grab or what I share for as long as possible. Like the new tracker I'm on their retention isn't great right now so I'm gonna seed shit like a mofo for as long as possible.
It may sound naive... But sharing is after all caring.
