try typing cd \ which means go back one dir

i think ive lost the track abit what exactly are u tring to do because when u open the cmd promt it always opens to c:/documents and settings the cmd prompt will never open to a:

Xp can not be run is DOS mode. You will need to boot up with a 3rd party DOS boot program. The only reason I can think that you cant access the C drive is maybe it is NTFS file format, which is like someone already mentioned, unreadable. I think it's time to give up.

Yeah I think your right It's time to give up and I mention that theory of the boot disk not reading the NTFS file system I might me right.

On a boot disk , type c:\ at the a:\ conmmand line , now your in dos
