Codecs Is Missing!?

uh, hi, i just got dsl and started to download videos for the first time. i just downloaded gundam wing episode and found out codec is missing and only sound (no pic) when i played on ms media player. i know there's softwares and other craps to be downloaded, so could any1 show me what is required to live in this harsh world to play movies + tv episodes???
