right my brothers mate has this software he downloaded of the net it alows him to copy dvds on to cdr but i cant remember what it is called does anybody have any ide

you cannot copy a DVD to cdr that's impossible.
there are many 'rip' programs, use google to find them

a rip program is to make a DVD 'smaller' in filesize so you can burn it on a empty dvd-disk

use can use NERO (www.nero.com)
you mean you want to watch it on your TV??

http://www.dvdrhelp.com has all the guides, but I recommend kvcd, there is a guide in my sig

muchspl2 don't make it to hard for this new gurl 
KVCD only works with a handfull of DVDplayers

not true, I havent found a dvd player the plays vcd that CAN'T play a kvcd
ESP all the newer ones, its detailed in my guide to try the test disc if her dvd player in not listed
besides nero sucks at encodeing, she need at the very least learn tmpgenc and burn with nero
