Updates might make your computer lag. Go to Start->Run->Msconfig->Startup to see what programs run on boot. If you are WinME, then press Cleanup. Make sure you defrag. monthly. Otherwise, I would recommend the updates.

You might have a Backdoor Trojan on your system.

At the present time, the most spreading Trojan Horses are BackDoor Trojans. They enable remote access to infected computers and PSW (Password Stealers) - they are trying to gather as much private information from the infected computer as possible and to send the info through the Internet.

To remove the Trojan Horse, it is enough to remove infected files from the infected computer (these files are created by the Trojan Horse). Although, if the infected file is running in memory, its .EXE file is protected (by Windows) and can not be removed easily. In such cases, you need to follow the steps mentioned to remove the infected file (the steps depend on your Windows version):

Under Windows 95/98/ME, you need to remove these files under MS-DOS mode, as described here:

    http://www.grisoft.com/html/us_faq.php?act...=6&co=healindos

Under Windows NT4, you need to remove infected files under VGA mode, again following this guide:

    http://www.grisoft.com/html/us_faq.php?act...=6&co=healindos

Under Windows 2000 and Windows XP, you need to start your computer in Safe mode with command prompt and follow these steps:

    http://www.grisoft.com/html/us_faq.php?act...=6&co=healindos

Under Windows XP, you should disable System Restore feature too - then, the content of _System volume information folder will be accessible. Please follow these steps:

PS I've never had to shut off Zone Alarm to visit a website. What website did you visit ?

If i have a trojan or whatever then AVG is updated so it shood find it, it finds no viri or trojans anywhere on my PC, including all my install files & AVG is a good antivirus program?. As for Zone Alarm blocking what i see on certain websites that is mainly down to me limiting cookies & banners, cookies are SPIES & i don't F*CKIN like em. I use VoptXP for defrag which i do evry couple a days. I think i will just do a full install AGAIN & leeve the updates alone.

    Thanks all for the replies

Im running a bootleg copy of XP with SP1 and all critical updates and never had a problem like this. My PC was pretty slow when I had Zone Alarm, that could be your problem.

A few have mentioned Zone Alarm causing problems. I have the free Kerio Personal Firewall so i will go back to using that & wait & see if there's any improvement to my PC's performance.

PS. I also have XP pro & the 124mb SP1 but i still prefer 98SE

A virus scanner is only as good as it's list of files recognized as viruses...

I just found two trojans on my box, and NAV and Pest Patrol both missed them...but my Trojan Scanner, with the newest updates found em...one of them was started during boot up, and definitely was slowing things down...

The point here is this, and it has been mentioned in this forum before...

It takes a while for the makers of the virus definitions to identify a certain file as a virus or trojan, and until that time you can very easily be infected while still passing your repeated scans...

Also, as I noted above, I use multiple scanners, and each of them has been known to find files that the others missed...
