Each to their own. I have all of my useful apps reachable with one click with my auto-hiding sidebar, everything else can be accessed within about three clicks. I prefer to have useful system information on my desktop (along with a pretty picture!
I guess I just couldn't stand the idea of a cluttered desktop.
Some people have made HTML pages with links to all their software and set that as their desktop background - that's a not bad idea if you like that kind of thing.

and klite board and stuff
and whould like to know how its done
