I do only have two cables for it, and the modem is inside it.
As far as I now, everything is up to date.

Well, if you try using the computer's cable it will allow you to see if it's a faulty cable or not. The lack of a battery will make no difference.

If you want to check your modem drivers, hold your windows key down and press the break key, then find the device manager in the System Properties window which pops up. Find your laptop's modem and make sure it doesn't have a yellow exclamation mark over its icon.

I've actually come across at least 3 different line cables for modems, but I've only been dealing with them for about 20 years.

Obviously the BT connector end has to be the same, but I've come across ones that use different pins at the modem end. And some with 4-pin RJ11's (not RJ45), and some with 6-pin. The last modem I got even came with 2 line cords for some reason, only one worked. Worth a try though.
