try running the XP patch from the same directory as ff7 mate.

You'll probabvly need to mess around with the games driver settings as well. It was meant to use 3dfx cards (vodoos&#33, so you have to tell it not to before it'll run anyway. Not sure where the settings are though, i just remember my room mate cussing at it for many hours.

You could also try updating your video card drivers, it would help a lot.

or you could get a ps1 emulator and download ff7 from suprnova
